Video Editor
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Video Editor for Team DSB’s new explainer series, which breaks down the human side of how the world works.
Our full description is below. But to save you time, here’s a quick summary to decide if its a good fit:
- We’re looking for someone to lead the editing for a Vox-like, social-first series (each episode is up to 90 seconds) and includes a voiceover, stock footage, and light motion graphics (as there’s no on-camera person).
- We’ve made the application pretty simple, and it asks for your portfolio links and rates there.
- We encourage you to submit early if interested, as we intend to onboard this person on October 23rd at the latest (with formal start on October 26).
About Team DSB
Team DSB is a social impact creative agency working with nonprofits, social impact leads, advocacy organizations, and mission-driven brands. We’re also building a media arm with original projects like America, Listen!, our on-the-street series where young people speak directly to the nation. This will be a new media brand, in partnership with our clients.
The Role
We’re looking for a Video Editor to help us produce about 3 posts per week for a new explainer series. This editor will help define the look, pacing, and feel of the series, and they’ll be paid to join our strategic conversations, including the editorial meetings where we choose upcoming topics.
What You’ll Do
- Edit short-form vertical explainers (9:16) for social, targeting 60-90 second long videos.
- Build each edit around the voiceover, pairing every line of narration with bold on-screen text, archival and stock footage, and clean visuals.
- Apply our brand guide and provided templates, and help evolve it as the series takes shape.
- Hit agreed turnaround times so we can publish on cultural and calendar moments.
- Bring ideas to editorial meetings about formats, hooks, and topics.
What You’ll Get Before You Edit
- Our brand guide and growing library of templates.
- A complete, researched script and final voiceover for every episode.
- Clear creative direction. We’ve spent the last six weeks testing formats, so we already know what doesn’t work, and you won’t be guessing.
- Time to be involved in editorial planning conversations, not just editing hours (paid in addition to your editing rate, of course).
Who You Are
- You have a portfolio of short-form vertical video, ideally voiceover-driven explainers, documentary, or news content.
- You know how to hook a viewer in the first two seconds and hold them to the end.
- You’re fluent in explainer-style visuals, including kinetic type, animated callouts, and clean charts, in Premiere Pro and After Effects.
- You have a good eye for sourcing stock and archival footage that makes abstract ideas feel real.
- You’re reliable with deadlines and good at taking feedback.
- You care about making complex topics feel clear, human, and fun.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with what’s performing in edu-content right now.
- An interest in social impact, culture, or civic topics.
The Series
We’re launching a new social media page that explains human-interest topics. Each episode explains how something works in 70 to 90 seconds, across science, health, civics, history, money, and culture. Episodes are timed to cultural moments, awareness days, and search volume.
The Brand: Three Core Pieces
You’ll get our brand guide as your foundation. Beyond the guide, three elements define the series:
- The voice (and tone). The voice is funny, self-aware, and effortlessly simple. It explains dense, doctoral concepts as if speaking to a 5-year-old, but it assumes an adult’s intellect.
- The white (or solid) background. A clean, solid background is the core of our visual identity. It keeps the focus on the idea and gives every episode a recognizable, uncluttered look.
- Strong on-screen text. Large, bold text carries the story visually and reinforces the voice.
The Style: Voiceover-Led Explainers
Think Vox videos like this and this and examples from the NYT and this brand, compressed into 70–90 seconds for vertical feeds and set on our clean, solid background. The voiceover is the foundation of every episode: the script and narration carry the story, and the edit’s job is to make each line land visually.
- The edit is built around the VO. Every visual earns its place by illustrating, emphasizing, or adding to what’s being said. If the VO says “three times more,” we see three times more.
- Pacing follows the narration. Cuts, reveals, and animations hit on the beats of the voiceover, not on a generic music track.
- Sources stay visible. On-screen citations, dates, and source labels build trust without slowing the story down.
- No on-camera host. The voice is the host, so the visuals do the work a face usually would.
Every Episode Includes
- Large, prominent on-screen text. Text drives the episode, with words paced dynamically to command attention and land the punchlines.
- Stock footage and b-roll. Real-world archival clips and stock videos anchor abstract claims in tangible human reality.
- Modern design. Sleek vector motion, animated callouts, and clean data visualizations (templates and tools provided).
Process
- Topic selection. We choose topics in our editorial meetings, which you’re paid to attend.
- Script and research. Our scriptwriter and researcher write a complete script, with sources where relevant.
- Voiceover. The VO is recorded.
- Handoff. You receive the full package: the locked script, the final VO audio, a source list (if applicable), and any reference notes.
- First cut. You deliver a first cut within 2 business days.
- Revisions. We do up to 1-2 rounds of feedback via Frame.io.
- Final delivery. You deliver the final export, plus a thumbnail, ready to post.
